Legal Cover

Barbara Ann delivered the welcoming remarks at the Johnson Rayburn Richards dinner hosted by the Harris County Democratic Party to a packed house of over 1250 people. The room was filled with energy as Texans look forward to new leadership at every level in Texas in 2010.
In recent months, Texas has been the subject of many political controversies. Many of the controversies appear to start and end with Gov. Perry, but our current Attorney General has played an important role as well. Gov. Perry has stonewalled the public; he has been given the cover to do so with legal opinions from the Texas Attorney General (check out the San Antonio Express News).
Through politicized legal opinions, our current AG has enabled destructive policies. This AG's opinions enabled Tom Delay's mid-decade redistricting and the margin income tax, imposed without vote by the people of Texas. His lack of action with regard to our electric and insurance companies in Texas have led to the highest rates/increases in the country.

The Office of the Attorney General has been politicized for partisan gain. Even though the Texas Attorney General is not the office that you hear about everyday, we must understand that the actions of the AG affect our everyday lives: the safety of our children, the electricity and insurance rates we pay, the makeup of our congressional districts, and who pays - and who doesn't pay - taxes.
Every election we have an opportunity to reexamine our choices in leaders. Texans are overwhelmingly dissatisfied with the leadership that we have had for over 15 years. The polling in Texas remains excellent for victory in 2010.
